Prior to assigning modern ornithological names there were no separate names for pelican species, and popularly all are still called by the traditional name, undan 'pelican'.

Ismail 1981 uses the name Undan Gangsa 'goose pelican' for the extralimital Dalmatian Pelican Pelecanus crispus. Interestingly, a popular name given to the introduced swans (Anatidae) is angsa undan 'pelican goose', which apparently refers to the resemblance of swans who puff up their wings in a swimming display to similar behaviour of the Great White Pelican.

Pelicans are today rare, but this sort of name suggests that once they were more familiar sights.
