The distinctive anhinga is known by several old names, of which นกอ้ายงั่ว nók-âay-ŋûa 'anhinga (bird)' is most commonly used today. This name also occurs as นกงั่ว nók ŋûa, without the wildlife prefix อ้าย- âay-.

Another old anhinga name is นกร้า nók ráa or นกอีร้า nók ii-ráa 'anhinga'. The form incorporating the wildlife prefix อี- ii- is more common.
