The Dromadidae crab plovers are named นกหัวโตกินปู nók hŭa-too-kin-puu, intended as 'crab-eating plover'. The name is influenced by the English name 'Crab Plover' and is based on นกหัวโต nók hŭa-too 'big-head bird', the Thai general name for plovers (Charadriidae).
