The two Thai species of jacana have different names and both names are unusual.

Hydrophasianus chirurgus has an old name, นกอีแจว nók ii-caeew, where แจว caeew is originally both the name of the bird and a representation its call. Today the name occurs only with an incorporated old wildlife prefix, อี- ii-.

Metopidius indicus is named for a spice, นกพริก nók pʰrík 'chilli bird' (or 'capsicum bird').

The family name for the Jacanidae has recently changed. In (18, 19, 20, 21) it was วงศ์นกพริก woŋ nók pʰrík 'bronze-winged jacana family'. Now in (22, 23) it is วงศ์นกอีแจว woŋ nók ii-caeew 'pheasant-tailed jacana family'.
