The modern Thai general name for flowerpecker นกกาฝาก nók kaa-fàak is based on กาฝาก kaa-fàak 'mistletoe; parasitic plant; any parasite'. Flowerpeckers often eat berries of the parasitic mistletoe plant. The seeds pass unharmed through the bird's digestive tract and thereby spread the plant. Some species of Dicaedae are also called 'mistletoe bird' in English, and this may have influenced the Thai naming.
