The Recurvirostridae are comprised of only two species in Thailand, both with very different names. The family takes its name from the Black-Winged Stilt (นกตีนเทียน nók tiin-tʰian 'candle-foot bird').

Popularly, recurvirostrids are regarded as a kind of นกชายเลน nók cʰaay-leen 'shore-bird', although in ornithological use this name is usually restricted to the Scolopacidae.
