The legacy of unquestioning adherence to English models in the earliest stages of Thai ornithological naming is particularly apparent in the Scolopacidae. Since the English naming departs markedly from the ornithological taxonomy, the dominance of English naming patterns is quite evident.

Names of species in this family include some genuine old Thai scolopacid names (partially redefined), general names for wading shorebirds or seabirds used in restricted meanings, coined names, and direct loans from English where no suitable Thai name was available.

Thai-English equivalencies in names are as follows:

Thai Thai meaning Used as equivalent to
นกชายเลน
nók cʰaay-leen
'shore-bird' sandpiper (incl. dunlin)
นกทะเลขา
nók tʰá-lee kʰăa-
'-legged sea bird' ...shank
นกอีก๋อย
nók ii-kŏaay
probably 'curlew' curlew (incl. whimbrel)
นกเด้าดิน
nók dâw-din
'earth-bobber (bird)' common sandpiper
นกปากซ่อม
nók pàak-sô(a)am
'fork-bill bird' snipe (incl. woodcock)
นกซ่อมทะเล
nók sôa(a)m tʰá-lee
'sea fork (bird)' dowitcher
นกปากแอ่น
nók pàak-àeen
'upcurve-bill (bird)' godwit
นกพลิกหิน
nók pʰlík-hĭn
'stone over-turner (bird)' turnstone
นกคอสั้น
nók kʰoaa-sân
'short-neck bird' sanderling
นกตีนเหลือง
nók tiin-lĕuaŋ
'yellow-foot (bird)' tattler
นกลอยทะเล
nók loaay-tʰá-lee
'sea-floater (bird)' phalarope
นกน็อท
nók nóat
(from English) knot
นกรัฟ
nók ráp
(from English) ruff
นกสติ๊นท์
nók sa-tín
(from English) stint

Names of interest include:

นกปากซ่อม or นกปากส้อม nók pàak-sôa(a)m 'fork-bill (bird)', used for the snipe and woodcock, is based on the shape of the bill. The name is spelt in two ways, and both spellings may be pronounced in two ways.

นกซ่อมทะเล or นกส้อมทะเล nók sôa(a)m tʰá-lee, literally 'sea fork (bird)', used for the dowitchers. 'Fork' is a contraction of 'fork-bill' in the snipe name. The dowitcher name thus means 'sea-snipe'.

ก๋อย kŏaay is an old shorebird name, also found with old wildlife prefixes as นางก๋อย naaŋ-kŏaay and อีก๋อย ii-kŏaay. In popular dictionaries the name is glossed as 'sandpiper', but modern ornithological Thai uses นกอีก๋อย nók ii-kŏaay as 'curlew (bird)' (which may also be the historically more accurate definition).

นกชายเลน nók cʰaay-leen is an idiomatic general name for shorebirds and small waders, where ชายเลน cʰaay-leen, literally 'muddy edge', refers to any sort of wetland, mudflat, fen, marsh, etc. The name นกชายเลน nók cʰaay-leen is also used for the avocet (Recurvirostridae).

นกเด้า nók dâw 'bobber (bird)' is a popular name for small birds which bob their rear ends up and down while walking. Formerly, the name also occurred with an old wildlife prefix as กระเด้า krà-dâw. It includes not only many kinds of shorebirds (Scolopacidae), but also wagtails and pipits (Motacillidae) and occasionally other kinds of birds.

Modern ornithological sources take different approaches to the 'bobber' names. Typically, almost all of these names have ended up referring to species in the Motacillidae, where นกเด้าลม nók dâw-lom 'air-bobber-(bird)' are wagtails and นกเด้าดิน nók dâw-din 'earth-bobber-(bird)' are pipits. However, the popular identification of นกเด้าดิน nók dâw-din 'earth-bobber-(bird)' with the Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) proved so strong that the unmodified name is retained in the Scolopacidae, and the onithological names for pipit species are all given modifiers. A few other sources also retain names based on นกเด้า nók dâw 'bobber (bird)' for several additional species in the Scolopacidae.

There are many different Thai versions of the family name for the Scolopacidae:

วงศ์นกชายทะเล woŋ nók cʰaay-tʰa-lee 'seashore-bird family' (18)

วงศ์นกชายเลน woŋ nók cʰaay-leen 'shorebird family' (19, 21)

วงศ์นกอีก๋อย, นกชายเลนและนกปากซ่อม woŋ nók ii-kŏaay nók cʰaay-leen láe nók pàak-sôaam 'curlew, shorebird, and snipe family' (20)

วงศ์นกชายเลนและนกปากซ่อม woŋ nók cʰaay-leen láe nók pàak-sôaam 'shorebird and snipe family' (22, 23)

Others paraphrase the Latin and use วงศ์นกปากซ่อม woŋ nók pàak-sôaam 'snipe family'.

Dowitchers are popularly classified as a kind of snipe, and here 'fork' is a contraction of 'fork-bill', the general name for snipe. The dowitcher name is intended to mean 'sea-snipe'.

แอ่น àeen 'curve; curved' is the same word as แอ่น àeen 'swallow' (Hirundinidae) and presumably derives from the curve of the swallow's wing. Here it is being used ornithologically as 'upcurve(d)'.

Small birds which bob their rear ends up and down while walking are popularly called นกเด้า nók dâw 'bobber (bird)'. Formerly, the name also occurred with an old wildlife prefix as กระเด้า krà-dâw. With the advent of modern scientific nomenclature, almost all of these species ended up in the Motacillidae, where นกเด้าลม nók dâw-lom 'air-bobber-(bird)' are wagtails and นกเด้าดิน nók dâw-din 'earth-bobber-(bird)' are pipits.
