In Chinese, the honey guides are literally known as 响蜜 xiǎng-mì-liè 'honey-guiding woodpecker'. (If you can't see the character, place your mouse over the top.) Only one honeyguide is found in China, in the far southwest. Unlike their African cousins, the honey guides of Asia do not have the habit of leading people or animals to honey. Accordingly, the Chinese name is clearly based on English, not on popular local usage (if this exists).
