The Japanese word for 'stork' is コウノトリ kō-no-tori, literally 'stork bird'. This is written with the single Chinese character . The name コウノトリ kō-no-tori is usually applied to the White Stork Ciconia ciconia (now C. boyciana). Other types of stork are named コウ -kō, also written with the character , e.g. ナベコウ nabe-kō 'pot stork' Ciconia nigra, written 鍋鸛.

The storks are sometimes known as コウヅル kō-zuru 'stork crane', written 鸛鶴.
