Traditionally, the wren is known as the Уран бялзуухай uraŋ byalzuukhai or 'deft finch' (i.e., skilful, dextrous finch) in Mongolian. This name is found in the 18th century Wuti Qingwen Jian (37) and is based on the bird's incessant movement, air of industriousness, and well kept nest.
Another less common name is Харцар khartsar or Харцар бялзуухай khartsar byalzuukhai 'khartsar finch'.
Ornithological naming
Ornithological naming in Mongolia originally used the traditional name Уран бялзуухай uraŋ byalzuukhai 'deft finch'. However, the 2007 "binomial" names gave the Troglodytidae the base name of Урагчин uragchiŋ, a word not found in most dictionaries. This represents the resurrection of an old name listed in the Wuti Qingwen Jian, which glosses it as meaning 'wren' (鴱 ). The name also appears to be related to уран uraŋ 'deft'.
The assignment of a new base name was clearly designed to avoid giving the genus Troglodytes the name Бялзуухай byalzuukhai, which is now ornithologically restricted to the Fringillidae. In addition, to ensure the binomial nature of the name, the word Халгайч khalgaich was added as a descriptor. Халгай khalgai means 'nettle' in Mongolian. The exact relationship of the bird with nettles is unclear since the suffix -ч -ch could suggest anything from eating nettles to a simple physical similarity. However, it's highly likely that Халгайч khalgaich has been added under the influence of Russian, where the word for 'wren', Крапи́вник krapivnik, is related to Крапи́ва krapiva meaning 'nettle'.
Inner Mongolia
In the Inner Mongolian ornithological names the wren is known as Уран шувуухай uraŋ shuvuukhai or 'deft birdlet', which is another variation of the traditional Mongolian name.
