The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. The Vietnamese name for the 'tropic bird' is Chim nhiệt đới 'tropic-zone bird', related to the Japanese and Chinese (Taiwan) names.
The Checklist of Birds of Vietnam (12) lists Phaethon aethereus as 'Vagrant, status or abundance uncertain'. There is room for doubt that this species has been identified correctly. Apart from China, surrounding countries report Phaethon lepturus and Phaethon rubricauda.
