General

Information is from dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. All Malaysian and Indonesian names in the process of conversion into modernised spelling only. Hover over Green Lettering to see additional information.

Pre-ornithologically there were no names particular to the Burhinidae, and these birds were among the many shorebirds called burung kedidi 'bobber (bird)'.

This complex of names is discussed more fully at the Scolopacidae.

All of the names used here are modern ornithological constructs based on:

kedidi 'bobber'

pasir 'sand'

sisir 'comb' (from the verb sisir 'to comb, to glean along the ground (as in '[beach-]comber')', but usually misunderstood as the noun sisir 'comb')

wili-wili (onomat) from the cry of Esacus recurvirostris, but extended to all Burhinidae species in ornithological Indonesian.
