Storm-petrels of the Oceanitidae and Hydrobatidae are called ウミツバメ umi-tsubame in Japanese, meaning 'sea swallow' and written with the characters 海燕. The alternative reading カイエン kai-en, which is an on-reading of the same characters, also exists.
There are also the regional names ウミツバクラ umi-tsubakura and ウミツバクロ umi-tsubakuro, which use variants of the word ツバメ tsubame 'swallow'. In addition, the storm-petrels have numerous other regional names around Japan.
The Oceanitidae are here tentatively called アシナガウミツバメ ashi-naga umi-tsubame-ka 'long-legged sea-swallow family'.
