As in most languages, the Aegithalidae were named after the tits (Paridae) in Mongolian, using the name Сүүлт хөх бух süült khökh bukh 'tailed darkblue bull (=tit)'. This is due to the earlier assignment of the aegithalids to the Paridae.

Under the 2007 "binomial" names, however, the generic name for Aegithalos was modified to Хөхбухандай khökhbukhandai. This is based on the vernacular name Хөх бухандай khökh bukhandai 'darkblue bullock', which is used for certain kinds of small passerines (identity not clear). Бухандай bukhandai literally means 'male calf in its second year'. The renaming thus involves changing бух bukh, literally 'bull', to бухандай bukhandai, a word referring to a younger bull.

Inner Mongolia

In Inner Mongolian the long-tailed tits are known as Онхол задуулай oŋkhol zaduulai. Задуулай zaduulai is the usual term for the tits (Paridae) and онхол oŋkhol is of unknown meaning.

In Mongolia itself, Задуулай zaduulai is now ornithologically restricted to the Regulidae (kinglets).
