The penduline tits are known as 攀雀 'climbing tit' in Chinese. This is an abbreviation of the original suggested name in the earliest list of Chinese ornithological names, Chinese Birds (35) of 1927, which was 倒攀山雀 'reverse-climbing mountain sparrow/finch'. Given that 山雀 'mountain sparrow/finch' is actually the name used for the 'tits', this name is ultimately a rough calque on English 'penduline tit'. (Note that the character 雀 was originally understood to mean sparrow but is in fact more broadly used to refer to finches and other small passerines.)

The word 雀 què is traditionally used for small passerines, including the sparrows and the finches. The tits are known as 山雀 shān-què 'mountain finches', possibly based on Japanese. In this case, 攀雀 pān-què 'climbing finch' is based on an earlier ornithological name, 倒攀山雀 dào-pān shān-què 'reverse-climbing mountain-finch', which is intended as a loose calque on 'penduline tit'.
The term 山雀 shān-què 'mountain finch' (or 'mountain sparrow') is the ornithological name for the tits (Paridae). The name has possibly been influenced by Japanese ヤマガラ yama-gara, written 山雀, which is the name of the Varied Tit (Sittiparus varius). Within the Paridae, Mainland usage now reserves 山雀 for species that at the time belonged to the genus Parus. Other genera use the abbreviated form 雀 què.
Due to taxonomic confusion, this species has been classed both as Remiz pendulinus and Remiz coronatus. These are known as:
Remiz pendulinus:
攀雀
(攀雀)
'climbing tit' (1, 5)
Remiz coronatus:
白冠攀雀
(白冠攀雀)
'white-crest climbing tit' (2, 3, 4)
