Until recently, popular and ornithological naming made no distinction between Turnix buttonquails (Turnicidae) and Coturnix-Synoicus quails (Phasianidae), which all share the same Thai general name นกคุ่ม nók kʰûm 'quail'. In former ornithological taxonomies both kinds of bird were in the same genus and family, and their shared identification as equivalents to English 'quail' remains common.

However, because buttonquails are more common in Southeast Asia than phasianid quails, ornithologically นกคุ่ม nók kʰûm 'quail' (without modifiers) and นกคุ่มแท้ nók kʰûm-tʰáee 'true-quail' are intended to refer to buttonquails, and not, as might be assumed, phasianid quails.

In more modern ornithological naming some of the buttonquail species are distinguished as นกคุ่มอืด nók kʰûm-èuut 'buttonquail'. (The etymology is unclear as there are two principal adjectival meanings for อืด èuut, 'slow' and 'swollen' and ornithologically the word is found only in these names.)

Earlier family names for the Turnicidae, วงศ์นกคุ่ม woŋ nók kʰûm 'quail family' in (18, 19) and วงศ์นกคุ่มแท้ woŋ nók kʰûm-tʰáee 'true-quail family' in (20), have accordingly been replaced in (21, 22, 23) with วงศ์นกคุ่มอืด woŋ nók kʰûm-èuut 'buttonquail family'.

The spelling of the quail name in the oldest dictionaries is คุ่ม kʰûm, which is also the current spelling. Unfortunately, the first ornithological publications introduced a spelling error "คุ้ม kʰúm" which then appeared in some later dictionaries alongside the original spelling. Following current practice, the spellings of all quail names from that intervening era have been corrected here to คุ่ม kʰûm.

นกคุ่มอืด nók kʰûm-èuut means 'buttonquail' but the derivation of the name is unclear since there are two principal adjectival meanings for อืด èuut, 'slow' and 'swollen', and ornithologically the word is found only in the buttonquail names.

Mostly from Robinson (& Chasen) 1927-1939 v1-4; additions from Madoc 1947 (et.seq.), and Glenister 1951 (both mostly names copied from Robinson)
