The name 'eight-coloured bird' (ヤイロチョウ ya-iro-chō 八色鳥) was originally given to Pitta nympha. It has since been extended to all members of the Pittidae, although some are much less colourful than others.
The name 'eight-coloured thrush' (八色鸫 ) was probably originally borrowed from Japanese ヤイロツグミ ya-iro-tsugumi 八色鶇 'eight-coloured-thrush', an alternative name for Pitta nympha. It has since been extended to all members of the Pittidae, although some are much less colourful than others.
แต้วแล้ว tâeew-láeew and แต้วแร้ว tâeew-ráeew are renditions of the distinctive call of Pitta moluccensisis. They have been extended as modern ornithological general names for 'pitta'. However, they do not accurately represent the calls of the other species.
ยักษ์ yák (from Pāli yakṣa) is a mythological giant or ogre frequently depicted in temple art and architecture. English has borrowed the same name from Sanskrit and other Indic languages as 'yaksha'.
