In Japanese, the waxwings are known as レンジャク renjaku, written 連雀. This is literally 'linked sparrow' (signification unclear) and appears to be from Chinese. The name is found in Imperial Pentaglot Manchu Mirror (37) of 1805 but appears to refer to a kind of swallow.
(連雀 is used on Taiwan for the waxwings, but Mainland ornithologists have appropriated the name to refer to the Hypocolius, a waxwing-like bird of the Middle East).
CULTURAL
In traditional poetry, 連雀 renjaku is a season-word for autumn.
