The Mongolian name for the White-throated Dipper is Гялаан омруут gyalaaŋ omruut, which appears to mean 'shining breasted' (the alternative form Гялан омруут gyalaŋ omruut is clearer on this point, as гялан gyalaŋ is quite clearly 'shining').
Inner Mongolian technical sources give the name Бидрүүл bidrüül, which is not found in dictionaries. The pronunciation is thus uncertain, but the word is likely related to the word бидэр meaning 'stripe' or 'pattern'.
The 2007 Mongolian ornithological names use the name Харзлай kharzlai, which is also not found in ordinary dictionaries. At a guess, the name is derived from the verb харзлах kharzlakh, which means 'stay unfrozen', referring to patches of water that don't freeze in winter. The proposed etymology is lent some credence by the noted tendency of White-throated Dippers to remain at swift hill streams during winter as long as there is open water.
