For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. The Vietnamese name for the dippers is Chim lội suối, meaning 'stream-wading bird'. The only member of the family occurring in Vietnam is the Brown Dipper (Cinclus pallasi).
One ordinary English-Vietnamese dictionary gives Chim hét nước 'water thrush (bird)' as the translation of 'dipper'.
