Thai classifies all owls, including both the Strigidae and the Tytonidae, as นกเค้า nók-kʰáw 'owl'. This is used in the family name of the Strigidae, and most ornithological names for members of this family are also based on นกเค้า nók kʰáw. The Tytonidae are subclassified as นกแสก nók sàeek 'barnowl'.
Another common name popularly applied to all owls is นกฮูก nók-hûuk 'owl' (onomat.). However, ornithologists restrict this name to one species, the Collared Scops Owl (Otus lettia or Otus bakkamoena).
A distinct onomatopeoic name, นกทึดทือ nók tʰéut-tʰeuu 'tʰéut-tʰeuu owl' is used ornithologically for the fish owls (Ketupa).
