General
The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. The general ornithological name for the thrushes in Vietnamese is Chim hoét 'thrush (bird)'. However, this name is not necessarily very familiar to the layman and does not appear in most Vietnamese dictionaries.
The ornithological names are neatly divided up by genus:
1. Thrushes in the genus Turdus are known as Chim hoét. This name is also used for several genera since transferred to the Muscicapidae, including the shortwings (Brachypteryx and Heteroxenicus), known as Hoét đuôi cụt 'short-tailed thrush', the whistling thrushes (Myophonus), known as Hoét xanh 'blue/green thrush', and the rock thrushes (Monticola), known as Hoét đá 'rock thrush'. One redstart (Luscinia phaenicuroides, formerly belonging to the genus Hodgsonius), is known as Hoét đuôi dài 'long-tailed thrush'.
2. Thrushes in the genus Zoothera (ground thrushes) are called Chim sáo đất in Vietnamese, literally 'ground-starling (bird)'. Sáo is a common bird name applied to a number of similar-sized birds including the ground thrushes, starlings, mynas, and sometimes magpies.
3. Chim cô cô, clearly a loan word, is the ornithological name given to the Cochoa.

ไพล pʰlay (Zingiber cassumunar, Zingiber montanum, or Zingiber purpureum) is a plant in the ginger family (Zingiberidae) widely used in traditional Thai medicine. Extracts typically have a greenish yellow to brown colour, and the name is used here as a colour word equivalent to English 'olivaceous'.
