Historically there are almost no traditional Malay names recorded for any of the pelagic seabirds, and none at all for the storm-petrels. Therefore, all their names are modern ornithological constructs.

These ornithological names are all based on English, either direct borrowings (as in petral ~ petrel and stom-petrel), or hybrid compound loan-translations (as in petrel-badai).

The respelling of 'petrel' as 'petral' appears to have originated accidentally in Ismail 1981 for the Procellariidae, where it is also spelt 'petral' in the English.

This spelling was then extended to the ornithological Malaysian names for the storm-petrels.
