The fantails are known in Chinese as 扇尾鹟 'fan-tailed flycatcher', a direct translation of the early English name. 鹟 'flycatcher' is from Japanese. The name 扇尾鹟 'fan-tailed flycatcher' is also applied to the Fairy Fantail (Chelidorhynx hypoxanthus), a member of the Stenostiridae that was previously classed with the Rhipiduridae.
The use of 鹟 'flycatcher' reflects the original early assignment of the fantails to the flycatchers. Aside from the Muscicapidae, the word 鹟 wēng is also used for the monarch flycatchers (Monarchidae: Hypothymis).
