General

Information is from dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin reflects Mandarin pronunciation; for some dialect names, it is no more than a polite fiction. Korean glosses are tentative. Comments and corrections welcome. China has a variety of nuthatches, a number of which inhabit remote areas in the west or southwest away from the Chinese heartland.

1. The nuthatches are known as shī in Chinese. (If your browser shows only a square or a question mark, place your cursor over the top and the character will appear). This old name is always found in combination, not as an independent word. It appears to be an ornithologist's term rather than a popular one. There are several vernacular names, probably of a regional nature.

2. The name of the Wallcreeper is a translation from other languages. It is known as 旋壁雀 xuán-bì-què, meaning 'wall-circling finch' (similar to the name of the treecreeper). The word , like English 'wall', ranges in its connotations from grand fortifications to the humble walls of a house. què is a word used not only for sparrows but also for finches and other small passerines in general.
