The only member of this family found in Japan is Cisticola juncidis (the Zitting Cisticola), which is known as the セッカ sekka. This is written 雪加 'snow add' or 雪下 'under snow' in Chinese characters. The characters are phonetically inspired (i.e., ateji) and do not represent a valid etymological meaning.
The word セッカ sekka is used in the names of a number of grasshopper warblers and willow warblers.

The name セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae and Sylviidae (Megalurus and Phylloscopus). The etymology of the name is unknown. It is written with the characters 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), which have been assigned on the basis of sound only and do not have any relation to meaning.
