In Asia, this family is represented by two subfamilies: the Cisticolinae and the Priniinae (prinias and tailorbirds).

Prior to the advent of modern ornithological naming, cisticolas, prinias, tailorbirds, and the other smallest insect-eating native birds were collectively known by the onomatopoetic name นกกระจิบ nók krà-cìp, which primarily refers to the tailorbirds (Orthotomus). Many of these small birds initially considered by Western ornithologists to be parts of a much enlarged Sylviidae family and therefore were given English names based on 'warbler'. The cisticolas were called 'fan-tailed warblers' and the prinias 'wren warblers'.

As ornithological knowledge of avian taxonomy improved, sections of the former Sylviidae were moved to other families and were given new ornithological names. The cisticolas were moved to the Cisticolidae and were renamed as นกยอดข้าวหางแพน nók yôaat-kʰâaw hăaŋ-pʰaeen 'fanshape-tailed riceplant-tip bird'.

Eventually, the only small birds left using the ornithologically restricted name นกกระจิบ nók krà-cìp were the prinias and the tailorbirds, reflecting the view that the prinias were most closely related to tailorbirds. Under Howard and Moore 2014, the two genera were reunited as the subfamily Priniinae within the Cisticolidae.

セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae, Locustellidae, and Phylloscopidae. The etymology is unknown. It is written with the ateji 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), characters assigned on the basis of sound only with little or no relation to etymology or meaning.
