The Phylloscopidae are a result of the break-up of the Sylviidae (Old World warblers) assemblage. Other families arising from this break-up include the Locustellidae, Acrocephalidae, Scotocercidae, and part of the Sylviidae.
1. Most of the Phylloscopidae have been named ムシクイmushi-kui 'insect eater' in Japanese (written 虫喰い), a name that has possibly been influenced by English 'flycatcher'.
2. Several members of the genus Phylloscopus are called ムジセッカ muji-sekka 'plain sekka'. This is written 無地雪加 or 無地雪下, where 雪加 and 雪下 mean 'snow add' and 'snow under' respectively. Both are unetymological and are merely a device for representing pronunciation. The name セッカ sekka on its own refers to the Zitting Cisticola - Cisticola juncidis, and with descriptors is also used for one species of Locustella warbler (originally genus Megalurus). In the tables it is glossed (rather unsatisfactorily) as 'cisticola'.
Phylloscopus ijimae was named in 1892 by the U.S. ornithologist Stejneger. Although the scientific name suggests it was named after a Mr Ijima (井島 in Japanese), the Japanese common name indicates that this should be Iijima (飯島), with a long vowel. The species was, in fact, named after the prominent nineteenth century Japanese biologist, Isao Iijima (1861-1921).

The name セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae and Sylviidae (Megalurus and Phylloscopus). The etymology of the name is unknown. It is written with the characters 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), which have been assigned on the basis of sound only and do not have any relation to meaning.
