Chinese has a rich variety of names for the Accipitridae, but usage shows considerable confusion; modern Chinese speakers can exhibit nonchalant disregard for many distinctions.

The broad general term for hawks and eagles is yīng. This is broader in meaning than English 'hawk' and can be used in situations (e.g., for the eagle as the national symbol of the U.S., Germany, and Russia) where English would use only 'eagle'.

In a narrow sense, yīng is used for the 'true hawks' (Accipiters), most commonly the goshawk, which is specifically known in Chinese as the 蒼鷹 cāng-yīng ('darkblue hawk'). The Sparrow hawk Accipiter nisus is known as 雀鷹 què-yīng 'sparrow hawk' or (traditionally) yào. The name yīng is also used for the osprey.

The large eagles are known as diāo or colloquially 老鵰 lǎo diāo. The eagles are also known as jiù.

Other birds in the Accipitrinae include:

Kites are known as yuān or 老鷹 lǎo-yīng (literally 'old hawk').
Vultures are known as 禿鷲 tū-jiù or 兀鷲 wù-jiù, both meaning 'bald-eagle'.
Buzzards are known as kuáng. In ancient times this referred to an owl or a nightjar; its application to the buzzard appears to be an importation from Japanese, which appropriated the character to write the native word ノスリ nosuri 'buzzard'.

In practice, a number of these terms are moribund or used with quite broad meanings in the modern colloquial. Terms such as diāo, jiù, and yuān are not necessarily readily understood in everyday usage. Even where they are used, usage may be confused. The terms diāo, jiù, and yīng tend not to be differentiated in most people's minds. The terms yīng and diāo are used indiscriminately for almost any kind of hawk or eagle. The term 老鷹 lǎo-yīng 'old hawk', supposedly meaning 'kite' in traditional usage, is in fact a loose general word for 'hawk' or 'eagle'. Indeed, the English term 'eagle' in golf and the musical group 'The Eagles' are referred to in Chinese as 老鷹 lǎo-yīng.

Usage in Taiwan reveals some Japanese influence. For instance, the Taiwanese term for Hodgson's hawk eagle is 熊鷹 xióng-yīng 'bear hawk', paralleling Japanese kuma-taka 熊鷹. The crested serpent eagle (Spilornis cheela) is called 大冠鷲 dà guān-jiù 'great crested eagle' in Taiwan, similar to 冠鷲 kanmuri washi 'crested eagle' in Japanese.

Ornithological naming

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Mainland ornithologists have tried to tidy up the naming, and Taiwan is showing signs of following suit. The systematised 'common names' are as follows:

Genus Taiwan Taiwan (new) Mainland
Aegypius (vultures) jiù jiù jiù
Spilornis (serpent-eagle) jiù jiù diāo
Haliaeetus (sea eagles) / diāo / jiù diāo diāo
Aquila (eagles) diāo diāo diāo
Spizaetus yīng yīng diāo
Pernis (honey buzzard) yīng yīng yīng
Accipiter (hawks) yīng yīng yīng
Elanus/Milvus/Haliastur (kites) 老鷹 lǎo-yīng yuān yuān
Butastur (buzzard eagles) jiù 鵟鷹 kuáng-yīng 鵟鷹 kuáng-yīng
Buteo (buzzards) kuáng kuáng kuáng
Circus (harriers) 澤鵟 zé-kuáng 澤鵟 zé-kuáng / 澤鷂 zé-yào yào

Under the reorganised names, diāo is used for large eagles, yīng for the hawks (Accipiter), and jiù for the vultures.

The word ハチクマ hachi-kuma literally 'bee-bear' is written in Chinese characters as 1. 蜂角鷹 'bee horned hawk' or 2. 蜂熊 'bee bear'.

The distinction between 'eagle' and 'vulture' in Chinese is a relatively recent one. The character is traditionally used for both eagles and vultures.

The etymology of サシバ sashiba' is unknown. In Chinese characters it is usually written 1) 差羽, where the verb 差す sasu has a very broad range of meanings, including 'to point', and , here read ba, means 'wing' or 'feather', or 2) , an ancient Chinese raptor name.

Vietnamese Ưng 'hawk' is from the Chinese word , Mandarin yīng, meaning 'hawk'.

Đại bàng is from Chinese 大鵬, Mandarin dà-péng, a large legendary bird sometimes translated into English as 'roc'. In modern China the name is sometimes used commercially (e.g. in company names) as an auspicious equivalent to 'eagle'.

Diều Nhật Bản 'Japanese hawk' appears to be based on an earlier identification of the local species as Buteo buteo japonicus. H&M4, which now recognises Buteo japonicus as a full species, confines its distribution to Japan itself, leaving the Vietnamese name as a possible misnomer.
