Mongolia is rich in diurnal raptors and in names for them. Some of the commonest names are (glosses given are rough English equivalents):
- Бүргэд bürged 'eagle' is used for large raptors such as eagles, griffons, and vultures. Бүргэд bürged appears to be a borrowed term, possibly from the Turkic languages (cf Kazakh Бүркіт bürqit).
- Харцага khartsag or Харцгай khartsgai 'hawk' is used for smaller raptors (hawks).
- Сар sar 'buzzard' is used for buzzards and certain other medium-sized raptors, including the Osprey (Pandionidae).
- Элээ elee 'kite' (occasionally Илээ ilee) is used for kites.
- Vultures are blessed with a variety of names, including Ёл yol (Lammergeier), Тас tas (also used for certain eagles), and Хажир khajir or Хачир khachir.
Other names are less clear in their referents. A number of names and usages appear to be regionally marked.
- Хяргүй khyargüi is used for the sparrowhawks in Inner Mongolia, but is also used for the Peregrine Falcon (Falconidae). The male is Морин хяргүй moriŋ khyargüi 'horse khyargui'; the female is Хонин хяргүй khoniŋ khyargüi 'sheep khyargui'. A related name is Хяргууцай khyarguutsai, which is the name of the harriers in Inner Mongolian usage.
- Хулд khuld or Хулт khult (also Хулт шувуу khult shuvuu 'khult bird') is translated rather loosely in some Mongolian-English dictionaries as "buzzard". It is found in old texts such as the Secret History of the Mongols (section 111), where it refers to a bird of prey. In modern Mongolian lists it refers to the harriers.
- In the older list of ornithological names, another term, Элэгт elegt is used for the harriers, but the word is somewhat of a mystery as it is missing from all Mongolian dictionaries in this sense. The usual meaning given is 'loved, dear'.
- Загалай zaglai is used for a kind of black, short-tailed eagle. In Mongolia it officially refers to the Snake Eagle, in Inner Mongolia to the sea eagles.
- Хэсэг kheseg is used in Inner Mongolia for the Eastern Imperial Eagle.
- Тарваж tarvaj 'marmot eater' is used in Inner Mongolia for the Eurasian Buzzard.
- Хэрэмч kheremch is used in Inner Mongolia for the honey buzzards.
There are a couple of raptor names and descriptors that are not listed at all in dictionaries, notably Үүрсээ üürsee (which is related to the verb үүрсэх 'to neigh') and Саржуу sarjuu.
Buryat names for the accipitrids are similar to usage in Mongolia. They include the following (not exhaustive): Бүргэд bürged refers to the eagles, Харсага kharsaga refers to the hawks, Элэе eleye refers to the kites, Далайн бүргэд dalain bürged 'sea eagle' refers to the sea eagles, Ёло yolo refers to the (Egyptian) vulture, Гриф grif (from Russian) is a word for the griffin, Хулда khulda refers to the harriers, and Хатюул khatyul refers to the buzzards.
Ornithological naming
The following list (arranged in loose groups, not in ornithological order) shows the ornithological usage of names. The "binomial-style" Mongolian list of 2007 makes a number of changes in order to satisfy the requirement that each genus should use only one name.

Several different devices are used to come up with distinctive names in the 2007 list:
* Fuse two words together into a compound word (Нөмрөгбүргэд nömrög-bürged and Согсоотбүргэд sogsoot-bürged).
* Remove unnecessary final nouns: Хажир khajir as a name for a kind of vulture. (Despite the appearance of being truncated, Хажир khajir is actually a valid existing name).
* Use variant forms. Mongolian frequently has forms with or without a vowel suffix, e.g., Харцага hartsag or Харцгай hartsgai. This has the disadvantage that native speakers will often see no distinction between the variants. Moreover, the genus Butastur (Харцгай hartsgai) ends up giving its name to the Accipitridae under this change. The list uses the alternative Бүргэдэй bürgedei for Бүргэд bürged, but this is possibly a newly coined form since Mongolian dictionaries do not carry Бүргэдэй bürgedei.
* Find alternative vocabulary. This may be an existing word, as in Загалай zagalai. Other cases are more puzzling. Ёлон yoloŋ is not found in dictionaries in the sense of 'vulture'. Гоорбис goorbis is anomalous in standard Khalkh Mongolian -- the 'b' sound in the middle makes it look like a foreign word. The term Гоорбис goorbis does exist in Classical Mongolian, but is Гоорвис goorvis in the modern language and refers to a kind of bustard. The list also substitutes the term Хулд khuld for Элэгт elegt as a name for the harriers, the revival of an old name.
The Inner Mongolian names follow different patterns from Mongolia (less regularised) and use some different vocabulary. Unlike at other families, harmonisation of acciptrid naming with the Mongolian names is limited, probably due to the greater salience and familiarity of these birds.

The word ハチクマ hachi-kuma literally 'bee-bear' is written in Chinese characters as 1. 蜂角鷹 'bee horned hawk' or 2. 蜂熊 'bee bear'.
The distinction between 'eagle' and 'vulture' in Chinese is a relatively recent one. The character 鹫 is traditionally used for both eagles and vultures.
The etymology of サシバ sashiba' is unknown. In Chinese characters it is usually written 1) 差羽, where the verb 差す sasu has a very broad range of meanings, including 'to point', and 羽, here read ba, means 'wing' or 'feather', or 2) 鸇, an ancient Chinese raptor name.
The male bird is known as Морин хяргуй moriŋ khyargui 'horse sparrowhawk', the female as Хонин хяргуй khoniŋ khyargui 'sheep sparrowhawk' (dictionary).
Харсуун kharsuuŋ or харсун kharsuŋ is found in the names of birds at the Accipitridae, Strigidae, and Sylviidae. The dictionary meaning is 'coarse', 'crude' (e.g. as used of foodstuffs), but in bird naming it appears to have the meaning 'hawk'.
Mongolian dictionaries give the meaning of Тарс tars as the female of the Great Spotted Woodpecker and related species (Эмэгчин овууна буюу алаг тогшуурга шувуу).
Үүрсээ üürsee is not listed in dictionaries. The meaning probably relates to the word үүр üür meaning 'nest'. There is a verb үүрсэх üürsekh meaning 'to whinny, neigh', but there does not seem to be any apparent connection.
Монгол хэлний дэлгэрэнгүй тайлбар толь: Шаравтархан өнгөтэй, жигүүр нь урт, сүүл нь охор, хүзүү нь бүдүүн, загас барьж иддэг цахлайн нэгэн зүйл усны шувуу. 'A type of water bird; a yellowish, long-winged, short-tailed, thick-necked gull that catches and eats fish'.
