The two genera of Monarchidae are named separately in Chinese.

1. The paradise flycatchers (Terpsiphone) are known as 綬帶鳥 shòu-dài-niǎo 'coloured ribbon bird' or 綬帶 shòu-dài 'coloured ribbon' because of their colourful appearance. Since 'coloured ribbon' can refer to the type of ribbon that is used on a coffin, the more auspicious-sounding 壽帶 shòu-dài 'longevity belt' is more common.

2. The monarch flycatcher is known as 籃鶲 lán wēng 'blue flycatcher', a direct translation of the English name 'blue flycatcher'. On the Mainland, it is known as 王鶲 wáng-wēng 'king flycatcher', which is a calque on English 'monarch flycatcher'.

wēng is used in Chinese for most species known as 'flycatchers' in English at the time of naming. Aside from the monarch flycatchers, this includes many species in the Muscicapidae and Rhipiduridae (fantails). wēng in the sense of 'flycatcher' was taken into Chinese from Japanese, where it is used to write hitaki 'flycatcher'.

Family name

The Mainland name, 王鶲 wáng-wēng 'king flycatcher', is used for the Taiwanese family name in preference to either of the local names.
