The Vietnamese name for the Monarchidae is Họ Rẻ quạt after the genus Rhipidura. Since Rhipidura is now in its own family, I've renamed the Monarchidae Họ Thiên đườn, after the paradise flycatchers.

General

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. The two genera in the Monarchidae are named separately in Vietnamese.

1. The paradise flycatchers are called Chim thiên đường, meaning 'paradise bird', very possibly a translation from English.

2. The Black-naped Monarch is called a Chim đớp ruồi or 'fly-snapping bird' in Vietnamese, a name given to many species known (or originally known) as 'flycatchers' in English. (Others include the muscicapid flycatchers and Philentoma in the Vangidae.)

นกจับแมลง nók càp-ma-laeeŋ 'insect-catcher (bird)' is used for most kinds of birds which were called "flycatcher" in English at the time these names were assigned. In addition to monarchs, these include all genera in the Muscicapinae (except Niltava); and Philentoma (gen. inc. sed.).
