All of the Cuculidae general names and exceptional species names are onomatopoeic.

นกคัคคู nók kʰák-kʰuu 'cuckoo' is used in all of the Cuculinae names except for the large Common Koel (Eudynamys), which has its own name, นกกาเหว่า nók kaa-wàw. 'kaa-wàw bird'. นกคัคคู nók kʰák-kʰuu is also used in the family name for the Cuculidae.

นกบั้งรอก nók bâŋ-rôaak 'malkoha' is used for the Malkohas.

The Coral-billed Ground-cuckoo (Carpococcyx) has its own name, นกโกโรโกโส nók koo-roo-koo-sŏo, which can be interpreted as 'shabby bird'.

The modern names for the coucals (Centropodinae), นกกระปูด nók krà-pùut and นกกะปูด nók kà-pùut, are based on an older onomatopoetic ปูด pùut with the addition of a wildlife prefix, กระ krà- or กะ kà-. ปูด pùut is a Thai rendition of the same distinctive coucal call which is used also as the base for the Malay and Vietnamese coucal names.
