Most of the ornithological names for the Columbidae are based on four old names. Many members of this family were kept as pets, hunted, and eaten and the basic names remain well known to Thai speakers both with and without the officially preposed นก nók 'bird'. The old names are presented here with their current, ornithologically restricted, meanings. In popular usage there can be significant overlap in how variations on the general names are applied to the kinds of Columbidae.

นกลุมพู nók lum-pʰuu or นกกะลุมพู nók kà-lum-pʰuu 'pigeon (bird)' (Ducula imperial pigeons, especially D. aenea; and Columba punicea, a wood-pigeon). ลุมพู lum-pʰuu appears to have been phonologically adapted from Malay limbuk, etc. where it refers to a green-coloured pigeon. The Thai name originally applied only to Ducula aenea, from which it was extended to the other largest native pigeons. The name occurs both with and without the old Thai wildlife prefix กะ- kà-.

นกเขา nók kʰăw 'dove (bird)' (Streptopelia turtledoves; Macropygia, Geopelia, and Chalcophaps doves; and Treron curvirostra, a green-pigeon). Thai has homophones for เขา kʰăw which could lead to misunderstanding; so most often 'dove' includes a disambiguating นก nók 'bird' even in the middle of compounds. In such cases we leave the word 'bird' untranslated in our glosses. These include names for several kinds of Accipiter hawks (Accipitridae) which are based on เหยี่ยวนกเขา yìaw nók kʰăw 'dove-hawk'.

นกเปล้า nók plâw 'greenpigeon (bird)' (Treron green-pigeons and Ptilinopus fruit-doves).

นกพิราบ nók pʰí-râap 'rockdove' refers originally and primarily to the domestic pigeon (Columba livia). Although not native anywhere in Southeast Asia, rock doves were introduced centuries ago in most urban areas. The Thai name is a very old Indic loanword from the same source as Malay merpati, perepati, etc. Due to the concentration of rock doves in urban areas, นกพิราบ nók pʰí-râap is now popularly equated to English 'pigeon'. This redefinition is now applied to form ornithological names for the less well known Columba wood-pigeons (excepting Columba punicea). The intention is that นกพิราบป่า nók pʰí-râap pàa (literally 'forest rockdove', but popularly 'wild rockdove') also be the ornithological equivalent of English 'wood-pigeon'.

The older family name used in (19, 20) for the Columbidae is วงศ์นกเขาและนกลุมพู woŋ nók kʰăw láe nók lum-pʰuu 'dove and pigeon family'. The more recent family names reflect greater popular familiarity with the domestic pigeon. In (22, 23) Columbidae is วงศ์นกพิราบและนกเขา woŋ nók pʰí-râap láe nók kʰăw 'rockdove (domestic pigeon) and dove family'.
