The origins of the three partially similar Thai general names for the bee-eaters are poorly understood and none are currently analysable.

The oldest reported general name is นกตับคา nók tàp-kʰaa 'bee-eater1'. Although it can be found in large dictionaries, it has not been used for individual species names.

Almost as early is นกคับคา nók kʰáp-kʰaa 'bee-eater2'. Some modern ornithological sources prefer species names based on this version.

Most modern ornithological sources (including 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23) use นกจาบคา nók càap-kʰaa 'bee-eater3'. (Note that this name is only superficially related to the complex of passerine names based on จาบ càap 'weaverbird' (Ploceidae).)
