The Pycnonotidae include many kinds of bulbul very familiar to the Thai. Bulbuls are commonly found not only in gardens and fields but are also frequently kept as pets. Some are prized singers. Especially popular kinds of pet bulbul may be called นกกรง nók kroŋ 'cage-bird', a usage which is understood as referring specifically to bulbuls. In early Western sources bulbuls are often described as a kind of 'thrush'.
Thai had a very old general name for bulbuls, หรอด ròaat, which survives today only with incorporated wildlife prefixes. The use of different wildlife prefixes (including variant spellings) results in five variant forms of this name: ปรอด pa-ròaat, ประหรอด prà-ròaat, กรอด ka-ròaat, กะหรอด kà-ròaat, and กระหรอด krà-ròaat.
Although นกปรอด nók pa-ròaat is today the most commonly encountered general name for the bulbuls, the other related names are still used and can be found in popular dictionaries. Modern ornithological sources base all species names on นกปรอด nók pa-ròaat, but at the time Lekagul was writing (18) and (19), he found it necessary to mention นกกรอด nók ka-ròaat as an alternative general name for the bulbuls.
Most Alophoixus species are distinguished as นกปรอดโอ่ง nók pa-ròaat òoŋ 'waterjar-bulbul (bird)', where โอ่ง òoŋ is a traditional form of very large earthenware jar with rounded sides that is typically used for water storage. Criniger bulbuls often fluff out their neck feathers in a way which suggests the shape of that waterjar.

ไพล pʰlay (Zingiber cassumunar, Zingiber montanum, or Zingiber purpureum) is a plant in the ginger family (Zingiberidae) widely used in traditional Thai medicine. Extracts typically have a greenish yellow to brown colour, and the name is used here as a colour word equivalent to English 'olivaceous'.
โอ่ง òoŋ is a traditional form of very large earthenware jar with rounded sides which is typically used for water storage. Criniger bulbuls often fluff out their neck feathers in a way which suggests the shape of that waterjar.
