The main corvids found in West Malaysia and Singapore are the crows (Corvus), one treepie (Crypsirina), one type of magpie (Cissa), and two types of jay (Platylophus and Platysmurus).

1. Burung Gagak is the Malay word for 'crow'. As in many other languages, it is onomatopoeic in nature. Ornithologically it is used not only for the genus Corvus, but for all species in the Corvidae.

2. Some sources use different names for a couple of species in the family. The Crested Jay (Platylophus) is called Burung Menjerit 'screamer-bird', and the Black Magpie (Platysmurus) is called Burung Kambing 'goat/sheep bird' or Burung Temenggang.

An old name for a number of crow-sized landbirds is dendang, although in modern popular usage dendang in the meaning of 'crow' has largely been supplanted by gagak. Dendang 'crow' is, however, retained in modern dictionaries, as are dendang air 'cormorant' and dendang laut 'booby', now joined by dandang 'cormorant' (using a variant spelling of dendang). These popular definitions contrast with ornithological Malaysian usage where dendang has been redefined as 'booby'.

Indonesian names

Indonesian naming divides genera largely along the lines of English:

1. The crows are, as in Malay, called Burung Gagak.

2. The treepies and jays (Crypsirina, Platylophus, and Platysmurus) are called Burung Tangkar (from Javanese).

3. The Green Magpie is known as Burung Ekek.

นกขุนแผน nók kʰŭn-pʰăeen properly refers to a traditional grouping which unites the blue magpies with the Harpactes trogons (Trogonidae). It does not actually mean simply 'trogon', but there is no comparable English translation for the name. Ornithological usage splits the familiar name between both groups. The unmodified name was redefined as 'bluemagpie' and the modified names are reserved for trogon names.

Sanskrit sārikā or śārikā 'talking bird' has been borrowed into Thai as สาริกา and ศาริกา, both săa-rí-kaa; and as สาลิกา săa-lí-kaa. Although the original Indic species identification is lost, Thai relates these names equally to magpies and to common mynas (Sturnidae).
