The Pnoepygidae are a result of the break-up of the Timaliidae assemblage. (Others include the Timaliidae, Pellorneidae, Leiothrichidae, and Vireonidae, and parts of the Zosteropidae and Sylviidae.)

Like other members of the old Timaliidae, assemblage, the members of the genus Pnoepyga are ornithologically known as Burung Rimba 'jungle-bird'.
