The Pnoepygidae are a small family that previously belonged to the huge Timaliidae assemblage. (Others include the Timaliidae, Pellorneidae, Leiothrichidae, and Vireonidae, and parts of the Zosteropidae and Sylviidae.)

The Pnoepygidae ('wren babblers') are known in Thai as นกจู๋เต้นจิ๋ว nók cŭu-têen cĭw 'tiny dancing very-short bird'. The name นกจู๋เต้น nók cŭu-têen 'dancing very-short bird' is shared with three other genera called 'wren babblers' in English: Kenopia and Napothera (Pellorneidae) and Spelaeornis (in the originalTimaliidae).
