As in other languages, the swifts are linguistically closely allied with the swallows. In Mongolian they are known as Ураацай uraatsai, which appears to be derived from Уран хараацай uraŋ kharaatsai 'deft swallow'.

Other terms include Тэмээн хараацай temeeŋ kharaatsai 'camel swallow' and Хурын хараацай khuriŋ kharaatsai 'rain swallow' (the latter being similar to the Japanese and Chinese names, which gloss as 'rain swallow').

Ornithological naming

The regularised names of 2007 give the double-barrelled name Моринураацай moriŋ-uraatsai 'horse swift' to the genus Hirundapus, despite the fact that the name Морин ураацай moriŋ uraatsai was originally given to the Fork-tailed (or Pacific) Swift.

Cultural

The nest of the swiftlets eaten as a delicacy is known in Mongolian as цагаан үүр tsagaaŋ üür 'white nest'.

Согсор sogsor, which is used in Inner Mongolian names for several sharptailed or needletailed species, usually refers to dishevelled hair that is sticking up. It is possible that there has been confusion with the terms шовхгор shovkgor and шовгор shovgor, which refer to pointy objects.
