The Mongolian word for 'ibis' is Билүүс bilüüs. In Inner Mongolia the ibises are known as Өрвилдэй örvildei, a name related to that of the storks (Өрөв öröv or Өрви ör'v). The Black-headed Ibis is listed as a Mongolian species only in (15).

The spoonbills are known in Mongolia as Халбаган хушуут khalbagaŋ khushuut meaning 'spoon billed', Халбагант khalbagant, Халбаганат khalbagnat, or Халбагат khalbagt, all meaning 'spooned'. The last is the name adopted in the updated terminology of 2007. The Inner Mongolian name is Халбагат өрвилдэй khalbagt örvildei 'spooned ibis'.
