General

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. Hover over Green Lettering Green lettering at this site hides a tool tip with glosses, further explanations, etc. Hover cursor to reveal. to see additional information.

The ibises are known as Chim Cò quăm 'curved[bill] stork (bird)' or Chim quắm 'curved[bill] bird' in Vietnamese. The word is a name used for herons and similar birds. The words quăm and quắm mean 'crooked, hooked, curved, bent'.

The spoonbills are called Chim Cò thìa 'spoon-stork (bird)'.

Ornithological naming

The naming of the threskiornithids is transparently divided between the ibises and the spoonbills:

Vietnamese name Subfamily Description Genera
quăm Threskiornithinae Ibises Threskiornis, Pseudibis, Plegadis
Cò thìa Plataleinae Spoonbills Platalea

The name as used in other families (Ardeidae and Ciconiidae) is as follows:

USE OF IN OTHER FAMILIES
Name Family Subfamily Description Genera
Ardeidae Botaurinae Bitterns Ixobrychus, Dupetor
Ardeidae Ardeinae Night herons Gorsachius -- alternative name
Herons Butorides, Ardeola
Egrets Bubulcus, Egretta, Ardea alba
Ciconiidae   Storks Mycteria, Anastomus, Ephippiorhynchus

Chữ Nôm

Characters used for threskiornithids in the now obsolete Chu Nom characters include:
