The ibises are known in Chinese as huán, also read xuán. Due to their resemblance to the herons, several of the ibises have names related to those birds. The Japanese Crested Ibis is also called the 朱鷺 zhū-lù 'vermilion heron' and the spoonbills are known as 琵鷺 pí-lù 'spatula herons'.
