The Phylloscopidae are a result of the break-up of the Old World warbler assemblage (Sylviidae). (Others include the Locustellidae, Acrocephalidae, and Scotocercidae, as well as part of the Sylviidae.)

Originally, the collective Thai name for warblers and the other smallest insect-eating native birds was the onomatopoetic term นกกระจิบ nók krà-cìp ('krà-cìp bird'). Today นกกระจิบ nók krà-cìp is ornithologically restricted to tailorbirds and prinias in the family Cisticolidae.

Current ornithological warbler names were largely coined by a Thai ornithologist, with each name covering several large groups within the old Sylviidae.

The Phylloscopus warblers, earlier known in English as 'willow warblers', were named นกกระจิ๊ด nók krà-cít 'tiny bird', based on the adjective (กระ)จิ๊ด (krà-)cít 'tiny, very small, etc.'. The naming is reinforced onomatopoetically by similarity to the calls of small birds. Popularly, the adjective is now usually จิ๊ด cít, and กระจิ๊ด krà-cít is an abbreviation of the bird name. Many members of Phylloscopus that have since been placed with the genera Abrornis and Seicercus continue to use this name.

Members of the genus Seicercus were originally called either นกแว่นตาเหลือง nók wâeen-taa-lĕuaŋ 'yellow-spectacles bird' or นกกระจ้อย nók krà-côaay 'very-small bird'. The latter was coined based on the adjective (กระ)จ้อย (krà-)côaay 'tiny, very small, etc.' and is a widespread ornithological name for the warblers, including the former Bradypterus (Locustellidae), many genera in the Scotocercidae, and the Gerygone fly-eaters or wren warblers (Acanthizidae). The meaning is essentially the same as นกกระจิ๊ด nók krà-cít 'tiny bird'; in order to distinguish the two we adopt two separate glosses, 'very-small bird' and 'tiny bird'.

Family name

The family name adopted here, วงศ์นกแว่นตาเหลืองและนกกระจิ๊ด woŋ nók wâeen-taa-lĕuaŋ láe nók krà-cít 'yellow-spectacles-bird and leafwarbler family', is based on a suggestion by (23).

セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae, Locustellidae, and Phylloscopidae. The etymology is unknown. It is written with the ateji 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), characters assigned on the basis of sound only with little or no relation to etymology or meaning.

ไพล pʰlay (Zingiber cassumunar, Zingiber montanum, or Zingiber purpureum) is a plant in the ginger family (Zingiberidae) widely used in traditional Thai medicine. Extracts typically have a greenish yellow to brown colour, and the name is used here as a colour word equivalent to English 'olivaceous'.

นาค nâak 'naga', from Sanskrit and Pali nāgá, is the name of a deity or kind of being taking the form of a huge snake, sometimes with multiple heads. Here the graduated tail feathers of Megaluris palustris suggest the traditional representation of the heads of a multiheaded naga.
