The new Sylviidae are a combination of the old Sylvia warblers from the Old World warbler assemblage (Sylviidae) and a number of genera from the Old World babbler assemblage (Timaliidae), notably the parrotbills. All names in this group are ornithological in inspiration.

1. The white-throats (Curruca) are known as นกคอขาว nók kʰoaa-kʰăaw 'white-necked bird', which is likely a calque on the English name.

2. The parrot-bills are called นกปากนกแก้ว nók pàak-nók-kâeew 'parrot-bill (bird)' exactly as in English. กนกแก้ว nók-kâeew is the general name for parrots (Psittaculidae).

3. The Yellow-eyed Babbler (Chrysomma) is known by the broadly used ornithological name for the babblers, นกกินแมลง nók kin-ma-laeeŋ 'insect-eating bird' or 'insectivorous bird'. กินแมลง kin-ma-laeeŋ is the regular Thai equivalent of English 'insectivorous' and can be used to describe any creature which eats insects. As a name for the babblers it is used for a number of genera in the Pellorneidae and Timaliidae.

セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae, Locustellidae, and Phylloscopidae. The etymology is unknown. It is written with the ateji 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), characters assigned on the basis of sound only with little or no relation to etymology or meaning.

The word Họa mi is a borrowing from Chinese 畫眉 huà-méi 'painted-eyebrow', the name of the Hwamei or Melodious Laughing-thrush (Leiothrichidae). In Vietnamese, in addition to the Hwamei itself, it has been applied ornithologically to the Chestnut-capped Babbler and scimitar babblers (Timaliidae) and the Yellow-eyed Babbler (Sylviidae).

ไพล pʰlay (Zingiber cassumunar, Zingiber montanum, or Zingiber purpureum) is a plant in the ginger family (Zingiberidae) widely used in traditional Thai medicine. Extracts typically have a greenish yellow to brown colour, and the name is used here as a colour word equivalent to English 'olivaceous'.

นาค nâak 'naga', from Sanskrit and Pali nāgá, is the name of a deity or kind of being taking the form of a huge snake, sometimes with multiple heads. Here the graduated tail feathers of Megaluris palustris suggest the traditional representation of the heads of a multiheaded naga.

.

In its original sense, 雀 què means 'sparrow' in Chinese, but it is also used for the finches and tits. In this case, 雀鹛 què-méi has been coined as the Chinese equivalent of the English term 'tit babbler' and 雅雀 yā-què as the Chinese equivalent of 'crow tit'. The intended meaning of 雀 què in both cases is 'tit'.
