General

Information is from dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin reflects Mandarin pronunciation; for some dialect names, it is no more than a polite fiction. Korean glosses are tentative. Comments and corrections welcome. Hover over Green Lettering Green lettering at this site hides a tool tip with glosses, further explanations, etc. Hover cursor to reveal. to see additional information.

The common Chinese word for a 'pigeon' or 'dove', especially the domesticated variety, is 鸽子 gēzi, also known as the 鹁鸽 bógē. Less commonly found names are 拙鸟 zhuō-niǎo 'clumsy bird' and 辘轳 lùlu. The wood-pigeons are known as 鹁鸪 bógū.

An older, more traditional name now mostly confined to the written language is jiū.

The carrier pigeon is known as 信鸽 xìn-gē 'letter/message pigeon'. (Sometimes also 传信鸽 chuán-xìn-gē 'relay message pigeon', 飞奴 fēi nú 'flying servant' - literary).

Ornithological naming

Naturalists use the word for members of the genus Columba. Pigeons and doves in the wild are called jiū. Divided up according to genus, the names of doves and pigeons are as follows (in the interest of consistency, is glossed as 'pigeon', jiū as 'dove'):

Columba
'pigeon'
Columba (wood pigeons) 林鸽 lín gē
'wood pigeon'
Streptopelia (turtle doves, etc.) 斑鸠 bān-jiū
'striped dove'
Also collectively known as 鸣鸠 míng-jiū 'calling doves'
Macropygia (cuckoo doves) 鹃鸠 juān-jiū
'cuckoo-dove'
Treron (green pigeons) 绿鸠 lǜ-jiū
'green-dove'
Ducula (imperial pigeons) 皇鸠 huáng-jiū
'emperor dove'
