The Pachycephalidae show conflicting naming in Malaysian ornithological names. Several authorities call them Murai 'thrush', but (24) calls them Sambar 'flycatcher'.

Both Murai 'thrush' and Sambar 'flycatcher' are used extensively for passerine species in Malaysian naming.

Murai is a standard Malay word used for 'thrush-sized' species and is used for the Turdidae (thrushes) Rhipiduridae (fantails), Oriolidae (Black-and-Crimson Oriole), Muscicapidae (Rock Thrush and Stonechat), Leiothrichidae (some minlas), and Irenidae (Fairy Bluebird).

Sambar, on the other hand, was coined as an equivalent of English 'flycatcher' and is often used for species that are (or were originally) known as flycatchers in English. Depending on the authority, these include the Muscicapidae (flycatchers), Rhipiduridae (Burung Sambar Gila 'crazy snatcher bird'), Stenostiridae (Culicapa), and Vangidae (Philentoma).

Indonesian name

Indonesian uses the name Burung Kancilan 'mouse-deer bird' for the Mangrove Whistler. The mouse-deer (or chevrotain) is a symbol of slyness and cleverness in local folk tales, and the name suggests secretive behaviour.
