The Stenostiridae are a small family which in Asia includes a former member of the fantails (Rhipiduridae) and canary-flycatchers from the Muscicapidae. The sole member of this family found in West Malaysia/Singapore is the Grey-headed Canary-flycatcher. This species was originally assigned to the Muscicapidae (flycatchers) and is therefore known as a kind of Burung Sambar, literally 'snatcher (bird)', the Malay ornithological equivalent to English 'flycatcher'. Burung Sambar is also used for flycatchers in the Muscicapidae (flycatchers), Monarchidae (monarch flycatchers), Pachycephalidae, Rhipiduridae (Burung Sambar Gila 'crazy snatcher bird'), and Vangidae (Philentoma).
Indonesian name
Ornithological Indonesian treats this species as a kind of Burung Silakan, which is used for the flycatchers (Muscicapidae).
