Ornithological names for the Muscicapidae in West Malaysia and Singapore are based on two main names:

1. The coinage Burung Sambar 'snatcher (bird)' has been given to species corresponding to the 'flycatchers' in English at the time these names were assigned. This covers the genera Muscicapa, Cyornis, Anthipes, Niltava, Cyanoptila, Eumyias, and Ficedula.

Burung Sambar is also used for flycatchers in the Monarchidae (monarch flycatchers), Pachycephalidae, Rhipiduridae (Burung Sambar Gila 'crazy snatcher bird'), Stenostiridae (Culicapa), and Vangidae (Philentoma).

2. Burung Murai 'thrush bird' tends to be used for birds called 'robins' in English, as well as some genera transferred across from the Turdidae. They include Copsychus and Kittacincla (magpie robins and shamas), Larvivora (robins), Enicurus (forktails), Calliope (Rubythroat), Myiomela (White-tailed Robin), and Saxicola (stonechats). Genera transferred from the Turdidae include Brachypteryx (shortwings), Myophonus (whistling-thrushes), and Monticola (rock thrushes).

Burung Murai 'thrush bird' is widely used in Malay for thrush-sized birds in many families. These include the Irenidae, Leiothrichidae (Burung Rimba Murai 'thrush jungle-bird'), Monarchidae, Oriolidae, Pachycephalidae, Pellorneidae, Rhipiduridae (Burung Murai Gila 'crazy snatcher bird'), and Turdidae.

Indonesian names

Indonesian usage almost completely differs from Malaysian. To a considerable extent assignment of names is based on genera, as follows:

1. Burung Sikatan is used for birds known as 'flycatchers' in English: Muscicapa, Cyornis, Anthipes, Cyanoptila, Eumyias, and Ficedula. Outside the Muscicapidae, it is used only for the Stenostiridae (Culicapa), which formerly belonged to the Muscicapidae.

2. Burung Kucica is used for Copsychus and Kittacincla (magpie robins and shamas).

3. Burung Berkecet is used for Larvivora (Siberian Blue Robin).

4. Burung Niltava is used for the niltavas.

5. Burung Meninting 'forktail (bird)' is used for Enicurus (forktail).

6. Burung Ciung-batu 'rock myna (bird)' is used for Myophonus (whistling thrushes).

7. Burung Murai-batu 'rock-thrush (bird)' is used for Monticola (rock-thrushes).

8. Burung Cingcoang is an onomatopoeic name used for Brachypteryx (shortwings), formerly belonging to the Turdidae.

9. Burung Decu 'chat (bird)' is used for the chats (Saxicola).
