Historically there were almost no traditional Malay names recorded for any of the pelagic seabirds. Therefore, nearly all their names are modern ornithological constructs.

Ornithological Malaysian use of olak for 'shearwater' is an artificial restriction of a more general seabird name. In the popular languages olak is a verb which describes various cyclic motions, here the tacking back-and-forth flight of seabirds often seen following in the wake of a boat at sea. The descriptive name could be applied to any of several kinds of seabirds. For example, olak olak or olak-olak (the reduplication indicating the repetitive motion) is usually cited as the name for the Brown Booby Sula leucogaster (Sulidae) rather than shearwater.

The other ornithological names are based on English, either loan-translations (as in penggunting 'shearer'), or direct borrowings (as in petral ~ petrel).

The respelling of 'petrel' as 'petral' appears to have originated accidentally in Ismail 1981 where it is also misspelt as 'petral' in the English. It has also been extended to the names of the storm-petrels (Hydrobatidae).
